Summer Classic 2017

The summer Classic is now officially in the history file. For those unable to attend all we can say is sorry, you missed a good one.  There was a great deal of trepidation on the part of the organizers this year mainly due to the short time available to pull it all together. With work proceeding on the new building and running in concert with the preparation for the Summer Classic there was a real concern about burning out volunteers. John and Ron did a phenomenal job as always. There is a significant amount of time that goes into laying out the trails and getting a crew out to clear trails and haul out targets. Once that task is accomplished the real work of setting up the shoots begins, position a target, layout pins to ensure the shot is challenging for the seasoned shooter and still enjoyable for the novice shooter. Then ask the questions… is the shot safe, are there any concerns for the taller or shorter shooter, and from the pin is it doable for the left and right shooter… adjust as required?  Once that is all cleared you go off and do it thirty nine more times…minimum.  Set out trail markers, build in safe in and out paths, making up course maps and on and on seems almost endless and is until the first arrow is shot… Many thanks to all that gave their time to help in the many tasked of setting up the course.

The galley crew ( Cathy, Ross and the Larry twins) as always had the early shift each day ensuring the coffee was ready and a hot breakfast available for those that were in need. In addition they were there to set up and prepare lunch each day and work their magic cooking the fish for the potluck Saturday evening.

Registration opened at 8 AM Saturday morning, with seventy nine shooters registering for the day. The numbers were a bit disappointing for the organizers but the attending shooters were a boisterous and enthusiastic bunch. Saturday had a twenty target two arrow round in the morning and a twenty target two arrow round in the afternoon. Comments following the first days rounds were the course were very, very well laid out. Many participants felt it very devilish on the part of the course designer to strategically place various objects (branches, trees, grass, rocks etc) to mess with their head when shooting. In their own defence the course crew was quick to respond “We never placed any of the mentioned objects, we only positioned the targets… that other stuff just happened to be there”.  Saturday evening there was an incredible potluck dinner in the back BBQ pit area. BBQed salmon fried oysters a whole array of salads and desserts. As always there was plenty to eat topped off with a generous helping of fun filled kidding and laughter.

Sunday morning brought out a few more shooters with the final tally coming in at one hundred and thirteen. The morning round was a two arrow round and the afternoon round was a one arrow round.

Awards for the leaders of each division were handed out followed by the prize draws. There was a fabulous draw table with over eighty items to be won.

We would like to thank all those members who came out and help pull this event together. It is only through their generous contribution that these types of events can be delivered.  Finally we would like to send out a special thank you to all that participated and made the shoot a success.
