Additional Details
The Junior Program’s main objective is to promote firearm safety and allow youths to access the shooting sports in a safe environment where they can improve and train to become the next generation of shooters and carry on the traditions of our sport. Whether you are experienced or have never shot before, the program will allow you to try different types of firearms, improve your techniques, and make you a better, safer shooter. Spectators are welcome to observe as well.
Everyone must sign up with the range officer on arrival and non-members must purchase a $20 day pass (one per family). Everything needed will be provided, including rifle, target, ammunition, eye and ear protection. However, you are encouraged to bring your own eye and ear protection if you feel more comfortable with it. It is preferable to wear contact lenses rather than glasses if you do not have a pair of prescription safety glasses or can’t see properly without, as safety glasses do not always fit over prescription glasses. Everyone on the range must wear eye and ear protection. Please bring a lunch and dress accordingly for the outdoor range. Anyone under 18 can shoot. Parents must be with their child at all times. If you have a PAL please bring it with you.
You are encouraged to check in prior to the sessions at junior22rifle@gmail.com and to contact me if you have any questions.
Thanks,
David Chaveca

Junior Development Archery Program (Oct. 2024 – May 2025)
What is it?
The Junior Development Program is designed to provide young archers a chance to participate in indoor target archery, receive coaching and encouragement that will allow them to improve their skills, and recognize them for their achievements. As archers develop their skills and abilities they will learn safety at the Range as well as fair play, courtesy, and good sportsmanship.
Who can participate?
Any member of the Nanaimo Fish and Game between the ages of 6 and 18. Shooter are strongly encouraged to have their own equipment, however, club equipment may be used initially.
What type of bows?
All types of equipment is welcome. Archers can bring, Longbows, either Barebow or Olympic Recurves, or Compounds. Club equipment to get the athletes started are Barebows.
When does it happen?
During the indoor archery season, October 5th, 2024 to May 4, 2025. There will be a Juniors-only time slot at the NF&G Indoor Range on Saturdays from 9:00 to 11:00 am. There will be trained instructors available at this time.
Recognizing that families lives are very busy it will be possible for archers to shoot at other time that the Range is open. Also some archers may wish to shoot more than once a week. Arrangements with the Junior Coordinator is required for this to happen.
How are skills measured?
Athletes will shoot Canadian 300 rounds (30 arrows at 18 meters), with modifications for the skill level of the shooter. Archers will start on an 80cm target progressing through a 60cm target and eventually a 40 cm as they master the required skills.
As the athlete’s skill improves they will receive badges, suitable for sewing onto a shirt.
Scores will be tracked and posted on a results board to show the athletes progress.
Parent Participation?
For safety reasons all shooters must have an adult present at the Range, there will be no just dropping off the children. It is acceptable for one adult to be responsible for more than one child or for adults to participate in other disciplines at the Range.
Parents will be asked to provide some help as score keeping, managing target set up etc. Parents are expected to support shooters that require constant/close supervision at the shooting line.
